Day 11: We awoke with lots of anticipation, as this would be the night of Sean's first international DJ gig. We switched hotels to the very lovely Renaissance near the famed Petronas Towers. Our room was not yet ready, so with signature Malaysian hospitality, we were upgraded to a suite - okaaaay!! With a view of the KL Sky Tower, no less.
We spread our stuff out over every last inch of the place, showered, changed into our suits and headed down to the lovely pool for the afternoon to wait for Jeffrey to sneak out of work and join us. We ordered some food, watched the women's Olympic diving on the telly, and just kicked it for awhile.
Jeffrey arrived around 3 pm, and we headed over to Maison (which turned out was 3 blocks from the new hotel - we made Jeffrey walk, which he did not like) and stopped for a bite a this cute pizza place called Yellow Cab Pizza - a bit of home. Totally cute place with yummy pizza.
Then on to the lovely club Maison, which looks on the outside like an Italian Villa. There we met our new buddy Luqman (who laughed when we told him that we walked over), with whom Sean had been corresponding about the gig, and the lighting guy, Calay. Both of whom took the shady out of club staffers. The sound was going to be banging, and we were even more excited for tonight.
At Jeffrey's insistence, we battled the notorious KL traffic (no one walks and the public transport is limited) to Petronas Towers or KLCC, as is is fondly called by the locals, with the intention of riding to the top of the world's second tallest building. Only to find out that 1.) You can't ride to the top - only to the bridge connecting the two towers on the 42nd floor (we are New Yorkers - the 42nd floor does not impress) and 2.) If you don't queue up at 7:30 in the morning, you won't get one of only 1,005 tickets given out for the day. We still aren't quite sure of the significance of the number 1,005.
So because this is Malaysia, there is a GIANT shopping mall at KLCC, and we shopped a bit more and then took a nearly 45 minute drive back to the hotel (which would have been a 10 minute walk) to rest up for Sean's big night. Jeffrey went home to pack an overnight bag, so he could crash in our gigantic suite.
After a cat nap, we styled Sean in his new, pricey jeans from TOUGH (this very hip UK brand)and T from Japan (he looked hot), and we headed over to the neighborhood where the club is for a quick bite of a GIANT order of chicken satay and roti. YUUUM!
At the club we are treated to the royal treatment - reserved table in the balcony, overlooking the booth, bottle service, etc. We got to meet a wonderful woman called Merlin ( a good frined of Ed from NYC, who arranged the gig for Sean) and her equally wonderful friend, Robyn, a filmmaker and musician. Their hospitality and generosity is greatly appreciated by us. Then Sean and Jeffrey's friend Winnie and her husband Clement joined us as well, and we had a merry band of friends there to show their support of Sean.
Following the tattoo contest and opening DJ, Sean banged it in with Ida Corr's Let Me Think About It. The crowd went nuts, and for the next 2 hours and 15 minutes, they we treated to a very slamming set from DJ Sean McMahon from New York City. (We'll download some video onto You Tube, when we are able.) Seanie really rocked it, the club management were extremely pleased, and Sean now officially has a new fan base in South East Asia (which includes some very cute drunk Malaysian girls.)
Jeffrey dubbed Sean the new Maison Idol becasue of all the adoring fans, and we went home around 3:30 am very happy and exhilarated and looking forward to the Sunday night party at Maison with our gays. We crashed into our giant bed for the night.
